Originally I went to Best Buy to pick up a HD Mino so I could study hard and location "between racks" photo shoot for my business. The employee I talked to gave this to me saying "does not come for another week, but cheaper than the Mino is on sale." It was a simple to pick me up.
It's a nice little unit, compact, fits in the back pocket if necessary, and the controls are very basic – large button is clicked red record. Click the red button gives great again to stop. Simplicity at its best.
I love that the unit has a built-in USB right, but I still use a USB extension, and I'm using an iMac, and since it hangs upside down, do not want to add tension to the USB plug.
I have not used the built-in editing software, as I'm importing my files into iMovie and edit it.
Quality wise, I'd say which is pretty good considering the size of a damn box of Candy Valentine Necco Candy heart. However, I must stress that will be used as stationary "Fixed" lens, not digital zoom. Once you use the digital zoom, quality, like * any * digital zoom, suffered greatly. To avoid this, I hit a super ring down to the front of my Ultra HD so you can screw in a wide angle and a telephoto lens. If you do not import their Frankenstein Ultra HD, then go for it.
I have not done much low light shooting with him, but I have a feeling I could get a bit noisy and grainy. I'm going to see more results the short term when you start using this in the studio.
I will be mostly with my Ultra HD on a tripod to record scenes behind the scenes of my sessions photography, so I'll have a way to keep the camera static and not move much.
Overall, I feel this is largely the value of 199 dollars paid. Remember that this is a device with a crummy little tiny sensor in it, so the quality will not be as good as a camera largest dedicated video, or the latest digital SLR with built in high definition. Apples and oranges.
With a little money and a bit of extra super glue, you can get more range and wide angle of the unit.
